Euro Trip Last Spring
Wed, 03/26/2008 - 02:18
Last Spring I took a trip with my friends to Europe for about two weeks. We went to London, Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin. We had a great time on the trip and would highly recommend anyone visit the place we went to. Everyone asks but I couldn’t pick a favorite from the trip because they all were special cities.
We spent most of our time on the trip in London because we flew in there and left there at the end of the trip. The city was great and we mostly had good experiences with the people. We took a tour of London, which was well worth it, bringing us to the most popular tourist destinations such as The Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. We also took a tour that brought us to Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor Castle. These tours I think are essential to any tourist because you learn so much about what you’re seeing while you’re there and you also don’t have to worry about traveling and scheduling all the visits. We also took a unique Rock & Roll tour which brought us around to some of the famous places around London that were significant for The Beatles and other bands and musicians. That tour was a good time and you could visit all those places on your own but the tour guide was so knowledgeable that it was well worth it.
Our next destination was Amsterdam. We happened to go to Amsterdam during Queens Day which is their biggest national holiday and there were approximately 150,000 people celebrating in the city. The city is a little dirty which also could have been worse because the amount of people there but the canals and feel of the city was amazing. Amsterdam is not very large and a great place to just walk around and take in the ambiance of the city. You have to check out the Red Light District just to see what it is all about. We also happened to find a great bakery that made the most amazing almond cookies I have ever eaten. We also visited Anne Frank’s house which was just something I had to see although wasn’t that exciting and very crowded. We didn’t get a chance to see much else because we weren’t there for a long time and most of the tourist spots were closed on Queens Day. Going to Amsterdam was quite an experience though. The city was filled with a sea of people dressed in orange and the canals were loaded with boats and people dancing and partying all day.
After Amsterdam, we went to Paris by train. Paris is a beautiful city as most already know. We took a tour of Paris as well. We climbed the Eiffel Tower and walked the amazing path to the Arch de Triumph. The food was amazing as expected and the people were very nice, although there were some people in the touristy areas that were not quite as friendly. Most of the time we just walked around and took everything in and took pictures of all the great sites.
Our final spot, before departing eventually from London, was Dublin. With so many Irish people in NY, it almost felt like a home away from home. Ironically, our cab driver from the airport told us his whole family lives in our hometown of Huntington. In Dublin, we took the on and off bus tour. We went to St. Patrick’s cathedral and took the tour of the Guinness Storehouse. We also went on a haunted Dublin tour that was pretty cool. We also got out of the city one day and took a tour up to Glendalough which was beautiful. We wished we had more time in Ireland to check out the rest of the country but we definitely got a nice taste of the country.
The trip was a great experience and there were certainly things we could have and probably should have done differently but sometimes those experience are what make the trip most memorable. We are now trying to figure out our next trip for this year.
